TAT FX Brief: Feb19

The Australian dollar is flying in late trade on Wednesday, boosted by a slightly hotter-than-expected Australian CPI reading, soaring iron ore and crude oil prices and broad-based US dollar weakness.

After opening trade yesterday at .7153, the upside momentum in the AUD/USD kicked off following the release of Australia’s Q4 CPI report.

While underlying inflation - at 0.4% for the quarter and 1.75% for the year, printed in line with market expectations; the headline CPI figure came in slightly hotter-than-expected, lifting by 0.5% in the three months to December and 1.8% over the year.

“The price action suggests the market was positioned for a soft outcome,” said Rodrigo Catril, Senior FX Strategist at the National Australia Bank.

Along with a modest rally in the offshore traded Chinese yuan in Asia, that saw the AUD/USD lift back to .7200, a level it remained until late North American trade.

The Aussie’s next tailwind was provided by the US Federal Reserve’s January monetary policy statement that confirmed that it’s not in any rush to tighten policy settings further.

“The Committee continues to view sustained expansion of economic activity, strong labour market conditions, and inflation near the Committee’s symmetric 2% objective as the most likely outcomes,” the FOMC said in its statement.

“In light of global economic and financial developments and muted inflation pressures, the Committee will be patient as it determines what future adjustments to the target range for the federal funds rate may be appropriate to support these outcomes.”

In a separate statement, the FOMC also acknowledged that it is “prepared to adjust” the details of balance sheet normalisation, if required, adding that it is “revising its earlier guidance regarding the conditions under which it could adjust the details of its balance sheet normalization program”.

The dovish tweaks to the outlook for the funds rate and balance sheet normalisation were cheered by investors, seeing the AUD/USD jump to as high as .7273, a level not seen since early December last year.

“It seems the Fed has listened to markets and is watching the global outlook closely with a ‘muted’ inflation outlook allowing the Fed to be ‘patient’ in determining future rate moves,” said Catril at the NAB.

Big gains in iron ore and crude oil prices were another factor that helped the Aussie to the top of the G10 FX leader board on Wednesday.

Turning to the day ahead, it promises to be another busy one for traders with several major data releases scheduled.

The highlight in Asia yesterday was the release of China’s manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMIs for January.

Elsewhere, Australian private sector credit data for December, along with industrial production, housing starts and construction orders from Japan, will also be on the radar.

Later in the session, the data-flow will go up a notch or two with German retail sales and unemployment, CPI from France and Spain, Eurozone Q4 GDP and unemployment, Canadian GDP and employee costs, jobless claims and Chicago Fed PMI from the US the headline acts.

On the monetary policy front, Mersch, Weidmann and Coeure from the ECB and Wilkins from the Bank of Canada will also be in action.

Trade talks between the US and China will also continue, creating the potential for headline-driven, or perhaps Tweet-driven, volatility in the latter parts of the session.

AUD/USD

Day's Range: 0.7262 – 0.7278

The United States Dollar continued its move lower overnight, hitting a four-month low to open this morning at 95.57 on the US Dollar Index. Global foreign exchange markets roiled after the Federal Reserves statement was released with the after-effects still overshadowing market movements well into Friday. There was some news to digest however with wage growth data - suggesting private wages increased by 3.1% over the past year. Chicago PMI fell sharply in January to be more in line with the ISM manufacturing survey and weekly jobless claims spiked. Nevertheless, the story of the day remained the Federal Reserves’ neutral stance with markets continuing to price in the policy adjustment.

Moving into Friday, the Greenback has more data to look forward to with non-farm payroll and another ISM manufacturing survey due for release.

AUD/EUR

Day's Range: 0.6344 - 0.6360

Euro gains on Thursday was quickly erased overnight after failing to consolidate above the 1.15 handle after reaching a high of 1.1514. The correction came in offshore trading, as the EUR/USD came under selling pressure following poor Italian GDP figures, sliding further into negative territory. There was no change for preliminary European GDP figures for the 4th quarter of 2018, as growth remained disappointing at 0.2% and 1.8% for the year. Unemployment in the EU zone was steady at 7.9% in December, which remains the lowest rate recorded in the Euro area since October 2008, and down from 8.6% in December 2017.

The EUR/USD settled eventually this morning around 1.1450, as movements will continue to be driven by American economic data to end the week. This evening sees the release of Non-Farm employment change with core inflation estimates out of the EU region!

AUD/GBP

Day's Range: 0.5540 - 0.5552

The Great British Pound is slightly weaker this morning when valued against the Greenback. The GBP/USD pair reached an overnight high of 1.3159 before settling around 1.3100. For the month, the Sterling is up nearly 3 percent against the greenback, its biggest monthly rise since January 2018. However given the Brexit uncertainty, 'any upside' remains well limited.

On the release front today we will see the UK January Markit Manufacturing PMI is expected to come at 53.5 vs. 54.2 previously, adding to Sterling negative tone.

From a technical perspective, the GBP/USD pair is currently trading at 1.3106. We continue to expect support to hold on moves approaching 1.3050, while now any upward push will likely meet resistance around 1.3150.

AUD/CNY

Day's Range: 4.8665 - 4.8772

United States Secretary of the Treasury commented that FX was part of the trade discussion, but they do not expect anything explicit to be made on the direction of USD/CNY as this will be against the principal of FX reform. "One-way FX movement is not in China’s interests.”

“On balance, the combination of an easing monetary policy backdrop and softening economic activities, but limited outflow pressure is likely to keep USD/CNY in the range of 6.69/6.80 near-term. We now expect the next Fed rate hike to come in June, instead of March. As such, upward pressure on USD/CNY triggered by USD strength is likely to be delayed.”

Due to the Chinese New Year payments to certain countries in Asia will be delayed during the below period:

China: 4th - 10th Feb

Malaysia & Singapore: 4th - 5th Feb

Indonesia: 5th Feb

Hong Kong: 5th - 7th Feb

Vietnam: 4th - 8th Feb

AUD/INR

Day's Range: 51.535 - 51.648

The rupee appreciated by 26 paise to 70.86 against the US dollar in opening trade Thursday, driven by the weakening of the greenback in overseas markets after the US Fed kept interest rate unchanged.

The US dollar weakened in the overseas market after the Federal Reserve left the key US lending rate unchanged on Wednesday, and said it would be 'patient' about making any further changes.

Besides selling of the American currency by exporters, forex traders said fresh foreign fund inflows and positive opening in domestic equities also supported the rupee up move, while surging crude oil prices restricted the uptrend.

The rupee opened strong at 70.92 at the interbank forex market, then gained further ground and touched 70.86 amid weakening of the American currency, displaying gains of 26 paise over its last close.

The rupee Wednesday had weakened by just 1 paise to close at 71.12 against the US dollar.

Foreign funds purchased shares worth Rs 130.25 crore from the capital markets on a net basis, and domestic institutional investors also bought shares worth Rs 502.26 crore Wednesday, provisional data showed.

Brent crude, the global benchmark, was trading higher at per 62.20 barrel up by 0.89 per cent.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex was trading higher by 246.08 points, or 0.65 per cent to quote at 35,822.38 while the NSE Nifty was trading at 10,705.60, higher by 53.80 points, or 0.51 per cent.

Announcements to Watch:
<table class="Table" style="background:white; border:none;
